Background
Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) was first released in 2012 and designed to promote global standardization and diminish variation in the acquisition, interpretation, and reporting of prostate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) examination in assessing categories that summarize levels of suspicion or risk of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). Since then, numerous studies have validated the value of PI-RADS, but, as expected, they have also shown some inconsistencies and limitations, what, added the advances in technology (both in software and hardware), guided the improvement and update of PI-RADS over time, maintaining the framework of assigning scores to individual sequences and using these scores to derive an overall assessment category. This process has led to the development of its last version, PI-RADS v2.1, released in February 2019.
