Purpose
Breast cancer is the most frequent tumor in women representing 16% of cancers. (1)
In Argentina, according to data provided in 2018 from the Global Cancer Observatory from the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the tumor with the greatest magnitude of occurrence, representing more than 21000 cases a year, 17% of malignant tumors. (2)
Being Mammography screening the study for breast cancer detection, new technologies as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis allow obtaining more information for the diagnosis. Its application in interventional procedures provides us...
Methods and materials
An analytic retrospective review was conducted, in which VABB with DBT were carried out.
In the analyzed sample of our institution, women who presented percutaneous biopsies from the period January 2018 to July 2019 were included (n°= 688).
All patients were evaluated with 2D FFDM and DBT with CC and MLO views previous to the procedure. Every study was categorized according to criteria from BI RADS 5thedition by two radiologists specialized in breast imaging.
Imaging interpretation was carried out in work stations with 5 megapixels...
Results
The evaluated patients had a mean age of 53.4 years (age range: 37-80 years old). For the malignant cases, the mean age rounded the 56.5 years, while for benignant cases it was of 56.5 years (figure n° 5).
The lesions were classified in microcalcifications (n°=431);architecturaldistortions (n°=81); asymmetries (n°=51); and nodules (n°=125). (figure n° 6). Table n°1.
In the architectural distortions, 73 studies were categorized BI RADS 4C and 8 BI RADS 5. (fig n° 7A)
The asymmetries corresponded to BI RADS 4 A (n°=23); BI...
Conclusion
VABB has permitted a higher quality and quantity material obtained for its analysis, as well as advantages acquired without the necessity of performing reinsertions of the needle.
UsingVABB the histological underestimation is lower than with the core biopsy system (6), having a 98% sensitivity and a specificity near to 100% (7).
DBT is a method which provides a greater quantity of breast information, overcoming the difficulties in the visualization of images that with the 2D could not be observed because of the morphology of the...
