Purpose

The aim of this study is to determine the role of stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy in cases with mammography-detected breast microcalcifications.

Methods and materials

There are many tools and tests for finding and diagnosing breast cancer. For most types of cancer, a biopsy is the only sure way for the doctor to know if an area of the body has cancer. Other tests can suggest that cancer is present, but only a biopsy can make a definite diagnosis. Histopathology remains as the gold standard. Results

67 patients (aged 30-69) with suspected clustered calcifications underwent VABB. The histological outcome of 67 performed stereotactic biopsies was: 40% (n=27) malignant lesions and 60% (n=40) benign lesions. In all cases of malignancy 67% (n=18) were the cases of ductal carcinoma in situ and 33% (n=9) of invasive carcinoma.

Conclusion

VABB is a relatively new diagnostic method in Armenia, though it can be a great tool in detecting the malignant lesions of the breast at early stages and is a valuable tool in the management of suspicious mammographic lesions with microcalcifications.
