Learning objectives
Objectives:
To review the normal anatomy of the upper GI tract obtained on an Upper GI series.
To identify the most commonly encountered pathologies in UGI series performed in children.
To address the information that needs to be delivered, from the perspective of the pediatric surgeon.
Background
Despite the declining number of adult Upper GI studies (UGIS) requested since the advent of endoscopy, the demand on Upper GI series in children has not dropped, as the mucosal details are not sought.
UGIS remains the first line imaging modality used in the diagnostic work-up of a child presenting with recurrent chest infection, persistent vomiting, failure to thrive and dysphagia as it provides exquisite details of the anatomy and function of the upper GI that can’t be learnt from physical examination or any other...
Findings and procedure details
The technique of pediatric UGIS is not the scope of this poster, as it was discussed in details in our previous poster. [1]
(Figure 1)
Crico-pharyngeus Muscle Impression:
Normally, a small non-obstructive posterior esophageal indentation at the level of C5-C6. [2, 3](Figure 2)
Posterior Esophageal Impressions:
1. Due to Double Aortic Arch (Figure 3)
2. Due to right sided aortic arch with aberrant left subclavian artery (Figure 4)
3. Due to left sided aortic arch with aberrant right subclavian artery (Figure 5)
Anterior Esophageal Impression:...
Conclusion
To recognize the various pathologies encountered in pediatric UGI fluoroscopic studies, and how to report them as needed from the referring surgeon perspective
