Purpose
The main purpose of the present research was to investigate academic intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and amotivation as a function of age and gender in radiography students across the country.
Methods and materials
A self-applied questionnaire based on the “Academic Motivation Scale (AMS)” [1] was addressed to a final sample of 314 radiography students.
This scale is based in the Self-determination theory which proposes a continuum comprising three types of motivation: intrinsic motivation (IM), extrinsic motivation (EM), and amotivation (AM), characterized by seven dimensions (IM = to know, to accomplish and to experience stimulation, EM = external regulation, introjection and identification, and Amotivation) [2, 3, 4].
Results
We obtained a total of 314 valid questionnaires, 221 from students of public and 103 from a private university, 68 male (21,7%) and 246 female students, Students from a 1st year present 51% of sample and from 4th year 49% and ages between 18 and 42 years oldn Table 1
Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett tests have been performed to evaluate correlation between variables, KMO of 0,908 means excellent correlation and Bartlett test present p-value lower than 0,01, showing significant correlation between the variables, these results is...
Conclusion
Radiology students have high levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and low levels of amotivation, which may suggest that these students have good academic performance and are self-determined.
This knowledge may be utilised in research designed to further assess the impact of motivational states on educational outcomes such as academic performance, absenteeism, dropout rates, etc.
