Learning objectives
The main aims are to recognize the spectrum of ileum pathologies, understand the role of CT enterography in evaluating ileum studies and to present typical imaging and non typical findings of ileum diseases.
Background
The ileum is the final part of the small bowel, following the duodenum and jejunum. The ileum is 2-4m in length and is separated from the cecum by the ileocecal valve.
This part of the gastrointestinal tract has a large list of various diseases. An optimal technique with adequate bowel distention by enteric contrast is required to evaluate small bowel abnormalities
CT enterography helps to identify small bowelorextraintestinal disordersand their complications, and also helps with the differentiation of these diseases.CT enterography is noninvasive, easy to perform,...
Findings and procedure details
All patients had preparation of the small intestine for examination: a low fiber diet for 2-3 days before the CT examination, and oral administration of an isotonic non-absorbable electrolyte solution containing polyethylene glycol or water before examination for 40-60 minutes.
All examinations were performed with a 64-slice multidetector CT scanner with the patient in supine position, by intravenous injection of iodinated contrast medium. Bowel wall enhancement was produced by intravenous injection of iodinated contrast medium with an iodine concentration 350mg/mL. The iodine flow injected per...
Conclusion
So what we know about Ileum diseases!?Small bowel diseases are rare, but theyhave a wide range of radiological appearances. It is not onlyCrohn’s disease andileitis. However, a wide variety of diseases may be associated with ileitis and mimicking it.We must not forget about rare tumor-like diseases, accidental findings, and complications.
CT enterography with contrasting the ileum with a negative contrast agent is an affordable and quite informative method in assessing the ileum, for the diagnosis and detection of diseases, as well as their differentiation and detection of...
