Learning objectives
To understand the basic principles of the system, its indications and utilities, demonstrating the main measures and images provided in the evaluation of lower limb alignment, emphasizing its 3D capabiliities.
Background
The EOS equipment and newest challenges in lower limbs evaluation
The multidimensional X-ray stereoradiography system, commercially known as EOS®, is a biplanar imaging system that uses the physical principle of the Charpak chamber, allowing to perform the exams with thegreat accuracy, with the advantage of reduced ionizing radiation (Figure 1).
Composed of two pairs of detectors, arranged orthogonally, which allows images to be acquired simultaneously in the frontal and sagittal planes, which identically match anatomical landmarks. As the position of anatomical structures is determined on...
Findings and procedure details
Main measures and images provided and it´s clinical applications
Many measurements can be taken using the system, with the advantage of an analysis of all spatial planes (Figures 3-5). After setting the reference points and anatomical landmarks needed for the preparation of the main measurements and angulations using the appropriate workstation, we analyzed and summarized the lower limbs examination in a didactic way:
1 - Length of the member
Limb length is calculated as the distance between the center of the femoral head and the...
Conclusion
The system provides several advantages over other well-established methods, providing valuable information about the relationship between spine, hip and lower limbs and its consequences.
