Purpose
Meningioma is by far the most common dural based lesion encountered in neuroimaging, however there are multiple neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities that clinically and radiographically mimic meningiomas. This pictorial review considers some of the lesions that can mimic meningiomas and provides an approach to differenciate these lesion on imaging.
Methods and materials
Ours is a retrospective study and the data from April 2017 to April 2019 were analysed. The dural based lesions which are diagnosed at our centers are followed up for the histopathological correlation following the resection of the lesion and 2nd review of the image sets were also done to further correlate between the imaging and histopathological findings.
Results
The differential diagnosis of dural-based lesions Fig 1. in the brain varies from incidental and benign to symptomatic and malignant lesions. In our study the lesion ranges from grade I meningioma to rare primary dural based sarcoma and primary dural lymphoma.
Over theperiod from april 2017 to april 2019 we found that meningiomas are the mostcommon primary dural lesions and was found in 189 patients.
Meningiomasare meningothelial cell neoplasms, which typically attach to the inner surface of the dura matter.
Most meningiomas are benign and...
Conclusion
The list of dural based lesion is far beyond the most common lesion meningionma. However most of the lesions show overlapping imaging findings. The differential diagnosis of dural based lesion other than meningioma requires a alogrhythmic approach taking into consideration history -sytemic and nonsystemic involvement , and typical imaging findings -type of enhancemnt patten(Fig-14) and -bone involvement ( Fig- 15).
