Learning objectives
Learn the basic ultrasound anatomy of the penis.
Distinguish by ultrasound (US) the most urgent and frequent pathologies of this organ and their treatments.
Background
The penis is a very important organ and is vital for both excretory and reproductive function. Acute penile pathologies are not a frequent reason of consultation in the emergency department, however, both clinicians and radiologists must have certain fundamental notions to recognize the most frequent and severe acute conditions in this organ. In fact, in the presence of clinical suspicion of an urgent penile pathology, the diagnostic confirmation usually requires an imaging test, ultrasound being the technique of choice. It is used to evaluate the...
Findings and procedure details
GENERAL ANATOMY OF THE PENIS (Fig. 1)The penis is composed of three erectile structures:
A pair of corpora cavernosa: located along the dorsolateral aspect of the penis.
A corpus spongiosum: lies in the midline and on the ventral surface of this organ. It contains the penile urethra.
All of the above are individually covered by the tunica albuginea. Superficial to this fibrous band, the Buck's and Colles' fascias are found, which cover all these structures. The venous drainage is constituted by:
A superficial dorsal vein: located...
Conclusion
Acute penile diseases are very important conditions that radiologist need to recognize. The ultrasound is the imaging test of choice to evaluate the integrity and vascularity of this organ. In fact, in many cases the use of this technique is very significant, since, depending on the imaging findings, treatment may be conservative or surgical.
