Learning objectives
Globally, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy, accounting for over two million cases each year including low- and middle-income countries. In the United States, breast cancer is the most common female cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death in women. Based on the information published by the World Health Organisation WHO in 2022, in Georgia, breast cancer ranks first among malignant cancerous diseases in women. In our country, breast cancer accounts for one in three cancer diagnoses in women. Breast...
Background
An objective of our work was to evaluate the efficacy of WBâMRI with intravenous contrast in assessing metastasis in patients with breast cancer. An observational study was performed from January 2022 to December 2023 in Aversi Clinic, in Tbilisi, Georgia. The inclusion criteria were histopathologically diagnosed patients with breast cancer. Primarily, breast ultrasound examination, mammography, and mammography tomosynthesis were performed with all of them. They were under the supervision of a mammologist and oncologist.Patients, assessed by low-quality MRI or only CT scan were excluded.A total of...
Findings and procedure details
WB-MRI was used to evaluate a total of 25 consecutive patients, who were diagnosed with breast cancer, with an age range of 25-80 years. 17 of them [68%] had a total mastectomy and axillary lymph dissection. Four patients [16%] underwent sectoral resection of the mammary gland. Post-operative patients were being treated with chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Four patients have been just diagnosed with breast cancer - they were primary patients awaiting the decision of treatment tactics.Initial metastatic sites were registered as single or multiple and...
Conclusion
Our prospective observational study confirms once again, that WB-MRI gives us practically full information for assessing metastasis spreading. One of the priorities of this investigation is radiation safety, cost-effectiveness and the possibility of detailed assessment
