To determine and compare bone mineral density (BMD) in lumbar spine using DEXA andquantitativecomputedtomography(QCT) – a cross-sectional study.
Methods and Materials
Patient Selection (Fig.1)
We retrospectively reviewed the patients with renal transplant admitted previously for a study in our institution,
who had undergone lumbar spine QCT and DEXA scans,
between the 2013 and 2017.
we selected the patients who had the criteria to realize DEXA scans,
under the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
We also exclude the patients which had any clinical or radiological story of spinal surgery or traumatic spinal disease.
In the final,
from a total of 80 patients,
The QCT had a positive correlation with the BMD values and with the T-score measured by DXA,
exhibiting correlation coefficients greater than 0.7: the rs-value (p-value) between QCT and T-score of the L1-L3 vertebrae was 0.755 (<0.001); the rs-value (p-value) between QCT and the BMD values determined by DXA of the L1-L3 vertebrae was 0,748 (<0.001).

osteopenia and osteoporosis cases was 119.7±25.6 (95% confidence interval,

In this study,
we compare the BMD obtained by QCT and the BMD and T-score from DEXA scans,
to provide an alternative way to the diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Due QCT software we were able to achieve the mean BMD from L1 to L3,
by delimitation of the trabecular bone in the centre of mid-vertebral body,
measurement which was not affected by degenerative changes in either endplates or cortical bone.
