Background/introduction
The EURATOM 2013/59 suggest that any equipment used for interventional radiology has a device informing the practitioner and those carrying out practical aspects of the medical procedures of quantity of radiation produced by the equipment during the procedure and of relevant parameters for assessing the patient dose at the end of the procedure.
In view of their longer life expectancy and their more sensitivity to the effects of radiation [3], children radiation exposure should be minimized where possible adjusting imaging parameters also during interventional procedures...
Description of activity and work performed
This single center retrospective study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Research Review Board. Informed written consent for every procedure was obtained in all cases from the child’s parents or legal representative. Data from 09/2017 to 09/2019 were retrospectively analyzed using dose monitoring software. We evaluated n=98 consecutive pediatric patients age< 16 years (mean 6 y; 3rd quartile 12,5 y).
Among procedures were included: Central Venous Catheter placement n=58, Retrograde Wedge Portography (RWP) n=35, Biliary catheter change/Cholangiogram n=21, Bilioplasty n=17, Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage...
Conclusion and recommendations
N=191 pediatric interventional procedures were performed. TABLE 2 shows acquisition parameters, table vertical position, DAP, AK and FT for all the interventional procedures included in this study.
Mean of DAP, AK and FT of all procedures included were respectively 13.84 Gy*cm2 ,0.06 Gy and 5.1 minutes. In addition, as showed in the Figure 1, the software allows to have information about the SID, the percentage of DAP coming from DSA acquisitions or fluoroscopy, the percentage of number of magnifications and frame rate used.
