Background/introduction
The EURATOM 2013/59 suggest that any equipment used for interventional radiology has a device informing the practitioner and those carrying out practical aspects of the medical procedures of quantity of radiation produced by the equipment during the procedure and of relevant parameters for assessing the patient dose at the end of the procedure.
In view of their longer life expectancy and their more sensitivity to the effects of radiation [3], children radiation exposure should be minimized where possible adjusting imaging parameters also during interventional procedures performed with equipment which is using the auto-exposition system.
Dose-monitoring software represents a valuable tool for improving patient safety and for raising dose awareness in fluoroscopically guided procedures. [1-2] Usually it is web-based and
enables capturing, tracking, and reporting radiation doses delivered to patients. However, at our knowledge no papers are focusing on the useful of the software during interventional pediatric procedures.
Our study assesses whether dose monitoring software can be useful in fluoroscopically guided pediatric interventions performed using a low threshold dose fluoroscopy protocol, different from the pre-set by the manufacturer’s one.
