Conclusion and recommendations
Paediatric CEUS is safe and useful in many paediatric applications involving most organs of the human body. Only a small number of side effects have been recorded in this large database of paediatric CEUS examinations, while a large variety of indications have been reported, covering a wide spectrum of paediatric pathology.
Physicians are strongly encouraged to contribute cases to the EFSUMB Paediatric CEUS Registry, allowing the body of evidence to accumulate. In this way, the Registry can be useful in detecting adverse reactions to ultrasound contrast agents. Moreover, it will help new indications to emerge and be further evaluated in smaller scale prospective studies, specifically designed for different indications. The registry’s value is further increased by the fact that CEUS is still performed in an “off-label” pattern in children. CEUS is recommended for numerous paediatric applications based on guidelines by EFSUMB, prevailing literature and observed patient benefit. The data reported in the EFSUMB paediatric registry support the technique’s safety and value in the paediatric age group.
