In March 2011, a tsunami caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the coast of Japan led to an energy accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Okuma, Fukushima. This was widley report as the most significant nuclear incident since Chernobyl in 1986. This event raised many questions regarding the safety of nuclear power stations on a global level and highlighted and re-emphasised the potential harmful effects of radiation.
‘Google Trends’ is a powerful tool created by Google that monitors popularity of search terms over time. It has been previously used as a surrogate for public awareness of varioous themes and topics [1-3]. We aimed to determine whether the events at Fukushima had an effect on public awareness of the effects of radiation.
