Pediatric intestinal failure (PIF) acknowledges a group of patients with a reduction in functional gut mass below the minimum necessary for digestion and absorption, depending on parental nutrition for survival [1,2]. Most common etiologies of PFI includes:
Short bowel syndrome
Patients with PIF are frequently involved in numerous studies and procedures using ionizing radiation, such as intraoperative fluoroscopy, barium contrast studies, or CT scans[1,3].
The detrimental effects of ionizing radiation are well documented, both for high levels and low...
Description of activity and work performed
We perform a retrospective cohort analysis through a query in our Electronic Health Record (EHR), including patients with PIF under 18 years between 2007 and 2019 and registering studies or procedures using x-rays.
Our medical physicists from the quality assurance office create a reference table for ERD of the different studies and procedures ( Table 1 ).
Conclusion and recommendations
A total of 99 patients were analyzed in a 12 years period. We obtain a mean age of 6.19 years, with a mean follow-up time of 4.78 years (range 0.08-12.14).
We calculate a mean total of 49.43 studies per patient. The 43.4% of the global cumulative EDR was contributed by CT-scans. The distribution of cumulative ERD per type of procedure is shown in Fig. 2 .
Using our ERD reference table, the cumulative ERD was of 74.64 mSv per patient (range 0.02-711.59). 60% of the...
