Conclusion and recommendations
The RPU is a complex adaptive system, which uses human factors methodology to provide a regulatory mechanism to ensure high radiation protection standards to protect patients, staff, and members of the public at CHI. It allows for clear lines of delegation of responsibility and ownership for radiation protection. The unit sits within the quality and safety governance structure of the hospital and successfully meets regulatory requirements.
While this unit was established in the absence of a single RPO to take on the role, it has proven that a multidisciplinary approach has significant benefits in achieving high standards in radiation protection. The aim remains to recruit a dedicated RPO, however, the unit intends to stay in existence but with the RPO leading out as chair and taking on some of the duties of the CSR and MPE/RPA.
The success of this unit is such the authors would recommended that this multidisciplinary approach be used in hospitals where a dedicated RPO is not available or as a support to RPO with limited time and resources to carry out their duties.
