Conclusion and recommendations
To these ends, practices/institutions should
1. understand current regulations, recommendations, guidelines from relevant authorities (with ongoing efforts such as through NCRP to facilitate review and modification as needed)
2. develop/revise policies and/or procedural practices for gonadal shielding that are harmonious with current scientific evidence and updated recommendations
3. provide appropriate level and depth of information for sufficient clarity for patients and radiographers/technologists to be able to understand and discuss the current practice and reasons for any modifications
- one strategy can be message mapping [20]
- include key messages, talking points
4. provide sufficient discretion supporting the professional training of the technologist/radiographer for the use of radioprotective shielding following an informed discussion
- if caregivers/patients still request even if shield is within field of exposure if this is not anticipated to limit important diagnostic information
- in any setting where the gonads are not within the field of exposure
5. While not directly applying to practices other than during radiography, similar review of practices may apply to use of shielding during fluoroscopy and fluoroscopically guided procedures and CT examinations.
