Description of activity and work performed
The “Ask Eurosafe Imaging action” started in September 2015 and since then, 32 radiologists, radiographers and medical physicists, from 16 European countries, have produced approximately 50 files of online materials, related to radiation protection issues, in the three areas described above, based on two concepts: (1) Tips & tricks; (2) What Patients Should Know. For the latter, the groups are supported by a patient representative.
The educational material is made available for free access at http://www.eurosafeimaging.org/ask-eurosafe-imaging.
In addition, the educational material is also incorporated into ESR education on demand as e-learning material where each T&T has a Multi response questions (MRQs), to assist in the learning assessment.
Since it was launched in 2014, EuroSafe Imaging Campaign has identified that one of the best strategies to improve the radiation protection culture amongst health professionals is to bring together the “medical imaging family” (radiologists, radiographers and medical physicists), through a teamwork approach, where each one of the different professionals can share their views, knowledge, skills and competences in this field, as a way to maximise the quality of care and minimise the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation, both to patients and staff.
During 2019 the following learning material has been produced:
CT group:
Interventional Radiology group
Paediatric Imaging group
The importance and benefit of having this multi-professional approach has also been recognised by the European Alliance for Medical Radiation Protection Research (EURAMED) in its Common Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for medical radiation protection and by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the summary of an International Conference in 2016, about the main problems and suggested solutions for improving radiation protection in medicine.
