Background/introduction
What is a KPI?
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are parameters which can be quantitatively measured. They can be used in financial and non-financial organisations.
- Measurements of a particular parameter i.e. KPI, could then be categorised ( Fig. 1 ) and its compliance can be displayed as a 'Balanced Scorecard Framework' ( Fig. 2 ).
- The Boston MGH (Massachussetts General Hospital/Harvard) group have developed radiology specific KPIs.
- Further elaborating on this idea, KPIs could be applied to measure parameters within the realm of radiation protection.
- The yielded results could be utilized for individual investigations, long-term monitoring, risk assessments and clinical auditing/re-auditing.
Legalisation of Radiation Protection.
- The European Basic Safety Standards Directive (BSSD), 2013/59/Euratom sets out standards for radiation protection in the European Member states which are legal requirements [1,2,3,4].
- The aim is to protect the public and staff against dangers of ionising radiation. This has been adopted by the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2013 and was transposed into a national legislation of EU states on 6th February 2018.
- The importance of clinical audit was also highlighted in the BSSD as a mandatory component.
- Radiology departments will have to demonstrate evidence of compliance with the BSSD through clinical auditing.
- Radiation protection specific KPIs ( Fig. 3 ) or KPIs aligned with BSSD radiation protection requirements may play a role in clinical uditing and re-auditing.
