Background/introduction
The aim of this poster is to present the Fluoroscopic doses for paediatric patients and the radiation protection optimization implemented for the common fluoroscopic procedures in DHA (Dubai Health Authority) - Children hospital. DHA is committed towards the implementation of ArabSafe aims of paediatric radiation safety (ArabSafe objective no. 2 statement: Promote safer pediatric imaging in Arab countries) and the promotion of radiation safety culture in UAE. The worldwide increase in use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic medical imaging each year is increasing the dose...
Description of activity and work performed
Latifa Women and Children’s Hospital (LWCH) being the Paediatric Hospital for DHA is monitoring fluoroscopy dose since 10 years. The summary of DHA dose journey is:
2009-2014: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation (TC) Project forms were used to collect dose data for fluoroscopy with external DAP meter and Diameter dose reading devices, which required the operators’ input, such as patient weight, height and age to get the DAP values and entrance dose for each patient.
2015-2017: The digital fluoroscopy system implemented, which has...
Conclusion and recommendations
DHA established local DRLs for paediatric common fluoroscopy examinations in order to promote good practice by producing optimum range of radiation dose values for fluoroscopy examinations. These DRL values benchmarked with the previous work done in DHA and internationally published literature (NDRLs UK 2016 and NRDLs Australia 2013).
DHA dosimetry journey will be a great contribution to paediatric radiation safety to promote good optimization practice and this can be useful for radiation protection educational programs. The result of the study can also use as a...
