Learning objectives
1) To illustrate and describe 22 classic signs useful in adult brain imaging.
2) To discuss each sign in detail with respect to causes,
features and differential diagnosis.
Background
Signs help in characterization in many lesions which are pathognomic for certain diseases.
Using imaging modalities like MRI and CT,
various signs will be discussed under the headings of causes,
salient features and differential diagnosis.
Findings and procedure details
Ice-cream cone sign
Classically represents the normal appearance of the malleus and incus on HRCT axials,
but it also represents a medium size acoustic schwanoma .
The intracanalicular component representing "the cone" and the cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) component representing the "ice cream"[1]. [fig.
1].
Delta sign
This sign represents a nonenhancing thrombus in the dural sinus surrounded by triangular enhancing dura in axial CECT [fig.
2].
The sign may not be seen in the early stage (less than 5 days) of thrombosis,
as the fresh...
Conclusion
Signs are useful in expidititious characterization of specific disease patterns with ease and confidence and plays significant role in our day to day practise.
A must know for all radiologists !
