Congenital variations of inferior vena cava in the general population were described in approximately a proportion of 4%.
Because of this complexity in its embryogenesis,
there are numerous anatomical forms and variations,
which can occur alone or in combination.
We have reviewed the congenital variations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and present some cases from our hospital in the last yearsto illustrate this patology.
Background
Congenital variationsof IVC in the general population were described inapproximatelya proportion of 4%.In order to understand this findings,
it is necessary to remember some concepts of its embryology.
The definitive IVC is formed by four segments that are,
in cranial-caudal order: Intrahepatic,
suprarenal,
renal and infrarenal.
The IVC develops sequentially,
primarily between the 6th and 8th week of gestation,
with the formation of anastomoses and posterior regression of the vitelline vein and three paired veins: subcardinal,
supracardinal,
and postcardinal.

There are numerous anatomical forms and variations of IVC abnormalities:
Absence of the IVC
Complete absent of the entire IVC or of only the infrarenal IVC is the rarest congenital anomaly.
It occurs when the three paired venous systems (subcardinal,
supracardinal and postcardinal systems) fail to develop properly; however,
perinatal venous thrombosis and atrophy have also been suggestedas possible etiologies.
Absence of IVC may be accompanied by symptoms of venous insufficiency in the lower limbs or idiopathic deep vein thrombosis.

Conclusion
There are numerous anatomical forms and variations of IVC congenital anomalies because of thecomplexity in its embryogenesis.Although these anomalies are not very frequent,
andmost ofthe patients are asymptomatic,
awareness of these variations is important for surgical procedures,
and they should not be mistaken for masses or lymph nodes.
