Purpose
Myocardial fibrosis can be measured non-invasively by CMR by calculating extra-cellular volume (ECV) using pre and post contrast T1 relaxation times of blood and myocardium.(Fig.
3)
Several variables such as obliquity of myocardium relative to the imaging plane and errors related to through plane respiratory motion may influence the results.
To date,
the ideal slice orientation to estimate the amount of myocardial fibrosis remains undefined.

The purpose of this study was to compare differences in native and post-contrast T1 maps and ECV values...
Methods and materials
Patient selection
After written informed consent,
64 consecutive patients (48 male,
mean age 59.7±15.3 years) underwent CMR examination on a 1.5T magnet (Aera,
Siemens Medical Solutions). All subjects were in stable clinical condition and in sinus rhythm at the time of examination.
Patients with classical contraindications for MRI,
such as claustrophobia,
pacemaker or automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) implantation,
MR unsafe objects and chronic renal failure (glomerular filtration rate,
GFR ≤30 ml/min) were excluded.
Individuals were instructed to avoid caffeine-containing food and drinks 24 hours prior to...
Results
Patient characteristics
Most individuals were men with a mean age of 59±15years,
a meanbody surface area (BSA) of 1.9±0.2 m2.
Left ventricular mean ejection fraction (EF) was normal (61.2±14.5%).
BSAindexed LV-EDV84,05 ± 31,3 ml and BSA indexed LV-ESV34,8 ± 28,3 ml.CMR examination was performed in 14patients with known coronary artery disease who underwent prior surgical or percutaneous revascularization,
20patients with angina or atypical chest pain,
5patients with prior non-conclusive stress test,
16subjects with suspected cardiomyopathy,
individuals with syncopal episodes 4 and 5 patients to despict...
Conclusion
Short axis and four chamber views equally allow quantification of native T1,
post-contrast T1 and ECV maps.
Correlation and agreement between these two imaging planes is excellent.
