Aims and objectives

COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 2013/59/EURATOM of 5 December 2013 laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation. This legislation will be applicate in Italy from February 2018, but many Italian radiologists are not completely familiar with the subjects covered by the directive. Methods and materials

All members received an email invitation to join the survey as an initiative by the "Radioprotection needs" project, that involve the Italian Society of Medical Radiology (SIRM)  and the Italian Associations of Medical Physics (AIFM) Scientific Societies. The survey, that was built in cooperation by the two scientific societies, included 15 questions about local radiation protection organization of the working structurer of the radiologists invited to the survey and the eventual presence of adiation protection dose monitoring system to the working structure and the possibility...

Results

1494 SIRM members participated in the survey and completely fulfilled the questionnaires. According to the results of the survey only the 38% of the participantsregularly review dose levels (DLR) of their CT scans (according to The legislation),and anlitlle lower percentage assessed that never revised the DLR of the scan [table 1].According to the reviews of theDLR the 30% of the participants regularly check them with the newest literature or fabricate levels [table 2]. Conclusion

Most italian radiologist are interested in dose monitoring system, and believe that they could help in the daily activity and could be helpful in view of the application of the new EURATOM directive. Nevertheless to date only few centers in Italyown one of the multiple products presents on the market to radiologist everyday use.
