Aims and objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential contribution on recall rate of one or two view digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) as compared to digital mammography (DM) in the assessment setting from the digital mammography screening program of Trieste.
Furthermore,
a comparison between the performance of the DBT in one and two view was made and the diagnostic agreement between the two radiologists involved in the revision of tomosynthesis images was evaluated.
Methods and materials
This monocentric study (Breast Unit,
Trieste-Italy) included 150 consecutive recalled women from the DM screening program between January and May 2018.
The cases that presented microcalcifications as mammographic pattern were excluded.
All recalled women were evaluated with DBT as second level examination.
A database has been constructed containing the regional code (CRA) for each woman,
as well as the age at the time of the examination,
the date of execution of the mammograms,
the breast density stated on the report (according to BI-RADS®36),
the reason...
Results
In the 150 women included in the study,
the age of the cohort was between 50 and 74 years,
the mammographic density was variable and the most frequently found lesions were irregular opacities.
The final outcome,
which we know as a retrospective study,
was 77% negative (no need for in-depth examination with needle biopsy),
while 8% of women received histological or cytological diagnosis of benignity and 14.7% diagnosis of a carcinoma.
(Table 1)
The patients were distinguished according to the final outcome known in: positive...
Conclusion
In this retrospective study,
as already shown in literature,
DBT was confirmed to reduce of 50% recall rate compared to DM.
The agreement evaluation between the readers showed also that there is not statistically significative difference between the two radiologists in reading one view DBT,
despite difference in the number of years of experience: both,
as illustrated from the analysis of the ROC curves,
have a good diagnostic accuracy.
This result could suggest for the future the use of DBT in one view as a...
