Learning objectives
1. To improve medical student satisfaction and diagnostic ability
2. To provide junior doctors with an opportunity to teach the classical appearance of key surgical conditions in a supported environment
Background
Radiology education is increasingly recognised to be an area for improvement in most undergraduate medical programs, with most teaching presently being on an ad hoc basis. When reviewing the surgical curriculum for the 3rd and 4th year medical students it became apparent that medical image interpretation can be an assessable skill, with several difficult surgical pathologies expected to be interpreted.
While there are good formal teaching programs offered by radiology residents and consultants at some hospitals, junior doctors are the main educators for medical students...

Resource Development
As part of the 3rd/4th year surgical rotations offered as part of the Joint Medical Program’s MD/BMed programs, students are examined on radiological images from a variety of subspecialties.
The curriculum was reviewed, and eight topics were identified:
1.Medical Imaging Modalities 2.Common Abdominal Surgical Pathology 3.Trauma Imaging 4.Neurosurgical Imaging 5.Common Vascular Pathology 6.Common Urological Pathology 7.Chest Imaging/Breast Imaging 8.Basic Orthopaedic Injuries
For each of the conditions identified, the students were taught relevant differential diagnoses based on a clinical stem.

Conclusion
With the level of student satisfaction and decreased concern regarding the imaging questions anecdotally, this program fills a gap within the surgical curriculum.
This also provides JMOs an opportunity to engage with radiological imaging and theory on a deeper level, which prepares them for improved engagement with MDT meetings.
With a fully developed curriculum with cases and imaging, background information and student quizzes, this program is easily transferable to other clinical schools, and with minor modifications to other undergraduate curricula.
