Learning objectives
To explain Doppler ultrasound basics to get a precise image.
To review its main applications in abdominal ultrasound.
Background
Doppler ultrasound provides both additional and definite information in numerous abdominal conditions.
For that purpose,
a comprehensive knowledge of the main parameters and precise adjustments,
remains a prerequisite in order to avoid a misdiagnosis and achieve optimal diagnostic performance (1).
Most important applications in abdominal ultrasound are discussed in this poster.
Findings and procedure details
1.
Doppler ultrasound basics.
Doppler effect:
Doppler effect consists of the variation produced in the frequency of the ultrasound emitted when the object in which the wave reflexed,
is moving.
The deviation of the frequency follows the formula shown in the image (2).
Colour vs Power:
Power Doppler shows the “power” of the signal detected but not velocities and direction of flow as Colour Doppler.
Nevertheless,
Power Doppler has advantages (3):
- No aliasing.
- Less angle dependence.
- More sensitivity to detect flow.
-...
Conclusion
DUS is an essential tool in abdominal ultrasound.
Residents must be familiar with physics to achieve an optimal diagnostic yielding.
