Purpose
Cardiac hamartomas are extremely rare with scanty cases being reported in literature.
These are usually asymptomatic incidentalomas.
Symptomatic ones,
on the other hand,
not infrequently present with shortness of breath,
palpitation or arrhymias and my conceivably lead to catastrophic events such as secondary periphral thrombo-embolism or even sudden death.
The diagnosis of cardiac tumors relies profoundly on the use of multiple imaging modalities in order to narrow differential diagnosis.
We discuss the radiologic and pathologic appearance of hamartoma presenting in atypical anatomic location.
Whereas cardiac...
Methods and Materials
We report a middle age Saudi male who originally presented to emergency room with first episode of unexplained palpitation. His baseline chest radiograph and ECG were essentially unremarkable.
Trans-thoracic (TTE) and Trans-esophageal (TEE) echocardiography revealed a homogenous echogenic mass within the left ventricle,
centered at the papillary muscle,
measuring 1.9 x 4.0 cm in size (Figure 1 and Figure 2).
Cardiac Magnetic resonance cine images depicted a well-circumscribed elongated solitary lesion confined to the antrolateral papillary muscle terminating at the chordae tendineae attachment (Figure 3,
4,...
Results
The final pathologic diagnosis revealed characteristic features of benign hamartoma concordat with our preliminary imaging diagnosis of benign avidly enhancing primary cardiac tumor.
Conclusion
This case exemplifies the critical contribution of imaging in directing appropriate management of such cardiac tumors.
