Background
Domestic violence,
in all of its forms (child abuse,
woman abuse and elder abuse) is pervasive in Western society.
In Western society the family is the single most common locus of violence.
It is impossible to separate one form of domestic violence from another.
Every health care provider should be sensitized to the possibility that the patient may be a victim of intentional trauma.
The recognition and reporting rate of adult domestic violence victims is quite low when compared to the actual prevalence.
The reporting rate for battered women may be as 2% in large metropolitan emergency departments.
The phenomenon of physical and sexual violence by men against women,
cover 1/3 of women living in Italy. 6 million and 743 thousand (31.9%) women,
are victims of such violence in their lifetime.
Among these women,
nearly 4 million have suffered of physical violence (18.8%) and about 5 million (23.7%) have experienced sexual violence.
If we consider only the rape and attempted rape as sexual violence,
the percentage of victims is 4.8% which corresponds to over 1 million of women.
