Methods and materials
We developed a multimedia structured reporting system,
called ViSion,
that records key images and voice descriptions of image findings,
tags the images with metadata defined by an ontology,
and assembles a multimedia structured report (Figures 4-6) [2].
The system is applicable to any image-based medical specialty, including radiology,
pathology,
cardiology,
gastroenterology,
oncology,
radiation therapy,
and surgery. ViSion provides the ability to link radiological disease metrics from serial exams to generate disease response timelines,
such as Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) (Figures 7,
8) [3].
During the past year we have advanced the ViSion system with the creation of patient lifetime graphs that can track a patient from birth till death.
Using ViSion's structured report data,
a patient lifetime graph displays is created with icons representing major medical events against a background of disease response criteria (e.g.,
RECIST).
Information describing prior major medical events (e.g.,
surgery,
chemotherapy,
radiation therapy,
birth,
death,
childbirth) is currently entered manually into this prototype system (Figure 9).
In the future,
integration with electronic medical record systems could more fully automate the patient lifetime graph generation.
Details of prior medical events are easily accessible using the interactive display (Figures 10-15).
As a user hovers over a specific item,
information about that medical event is shown in a pop-up display.
Finally,
ViSion also provides a means to data mine information contained in the disease timelines and lifetime graphs to yield outcomes from cohorts of patients (Figure 16).
