Background
The Interventional Radiology procedures being done are becoming increasingly complex and diverse ;coupled with it is the requirement for proper sedation and analgesia for the procedures .
Since interventional radiologists are often responsible for sedation in most IR procedures,
having expertise and skills in this area is necessary.
One of the Prime objective of Minimally Invasive Interventional Radiological treatments should be to make them as comfortable and painless as possible.
Among various options available (Local anaesthesia,
general Anaesthesia ,
Epidural Anaesthesia etc ) to achieve so ,
regional anaesthesia particularly Image guided Peripheral Nerve Block has become popular for various IR procedures.
PNBs are being increasingly used since they minimise the risk of peri-procedural complications such as due to opioid use (e.g respiratory depression),GA overdose ,
metabolic abnormalities etc ; alleviate the need for general anaesthesia which is difficult in high risk patients .Image Guided PNBs have better procedural success and outcomes ,
complications are less than the palpatory nerve blocks .
Patient tolerability and post procedure comfort is much better when PNBs are employed during the IR procedures .
