The diagnosis of alkaptonuria has been confirmed in all children by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS Agilent 5975C - 7820,
Agilent Technologies Inc.,
USA).
The study was approved by the Independent Research Ethical Committee of the Medical University of Gdańsk (NKBBN / 388/2016).
No patient had a significant knee injury.
MRI of knee joint were prospectively evaluated in eight children (M/F=4/4,
age 9-17yo) diagnosed with AKU.
Imaging was performer without sedation in standard sequences with the 3.0T Philips Achieva TX clinical scanner using a sixteen-channel sense knee coil.
For acquiring morphological images,
all subjects underwent a coronal T2 TSE (turbo spin echo) and T1 TSE with a fat suppression,
coronal T1 TSE,
transversal T1 Dixon, transversal T2w FFE (fast field echo).
All studies were evaluated by a radiology specialist with 8 years experience in the musculosceletal MRI.
