Methods and Materials
Thirty one boys with haemophilia A (severe 24,
mean age 11.3 ±3.7) who are followed at paediatic Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre (HCCC) in Aghia Sophia Children’s Hospital,
Athens,
Greece were evaluated with DXA and pQCT.
An informed consent was obtained from all study participants and/or their parents.
Height and weight was measured by standard methods.
Tanner stage was determined for enitalia and/or pubic hair by inspection.
Whole body less head (TBLH ,ROI of total body after substracion of cranium) and/or lumbar spine (LS) DXA scans were performed using Lunar Prodigy scanner using standard positional techniques (GE Lunar Corporation,
Madison,
WI,).All data analyzed using software versions 6.6 and 6.7.Values for whole body and lumbar spine bone mineral content ( BMC,[g]),
and bone mineral density (BMD ,[g/cm2]) and their z-score (normal value: ≥-2) respectively were obtained.
pQCT scans (XCT-2000; Stratec,
Pforzheim,
Germany),of both radii (at 4% and 60% site of total length of radius) and both tibiae (at 4% and 65% site of total length of tibia ) were performed.
All scans were analyzed with XCT v5.50 software. The following parameters were measured: trabecular bone density ( TBD,
[mg /cm3]),
total bone density (ToBD[mg /cm3]) and trabecular bone content (TbC [g /cm]) at 4% site or the radius and tibia ,cortical bone density( CBD[mg/cm3]),
cortical bone content CC[g/cm]) at the 60% radial site of the radius and 65% tibial site ,
strength-stress index (SSI,
[mm3]),
tibial cortical area (CA,[mm]),
inner and outer bone contour length (PERI,
ENDO[mm]),
cortical,
periosteum and endosteum circumference (CTHC,
PERIC,
ENDOC[mm]) and mean cortical thickness (CTH,[mm]) at the 65% site of the tibia.
