Background/introduction
Medical ionising radiation is the largest man made contributor to population dose.
The EU requires that all member states determine population dose.
Dose awareness has become very prominent internationally in recent years with campaigns such as EUROSAFE.
The recent emergence of dose tracking software has provided a tool to measure,
analyze and report patient doses.
The Irish State health providers (the Health Service Executive or HSE) National Radiation Safety Committee recommended the use of this software to facilitate population dose measurement and scan optimisation in 2014.
In addition,
this software can assist in complying with a number of provisions of EU directive 2013/59 Euratom in optimisation,
risk information,
accident prevention,
patient follow up and the establishment of dose reference levels.
The HSE medical exposure radiation unit (MERU) performed a survey of radiology departments in Ireland to assess how dose was currently being recorded across the country and to check the level of uptake of dose tracking or management software.
