Background/introduction
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this work is to analyse the weaknesses of the radiation monitoring systems (RMS) that are being used today, and to evaluate how Business Intelligence (BI) software will introduce new strategies to solve them.
BACKGROUND
RMS that continuously measure radiation in radiology departments are essential to ensure safety and satisfy regulatory requirements. For this purpose, radiology equipment send all the data related to each imaging study to RMS. Accurate and appropriate processing of this data is the key to success in the control and management of the medical radiation.
However, currently RMS show big limitations in the visualization, filtering and analysis of the data.
These systems are not able to represent more than two variables at the same time. It means that it is not possible to view or to compare one metric in different dimensions, or different metrics in the same dimension. For instance, kilovoltage, milliamperes and imaging quality index. These kind of analysis would be very useful to achieve optimization of dose and imaging quality.
Furthermore, filtering methods of RMS have some problems which lead medical physicists to spend a significant quantity of time searching for the information that they need. Filters are not usually flexible and the user cannot create new filtering fields. In addition, these systems do not take into account relationships between variables when the user choose the fields to filter, so they allow to make choices which do not make sense.
Finally, the mathematical and statistical operations implemented in these software are restricted to those supplied by the manufacturer, so data have to be export out of the RMS to another program to make a deeper analysis.
