Background/introduction
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Between 2017 and 2019, in the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Center (CMNIM) of the Clinical Hospital were performed more than 300 scintigraphy diagnostic scans for pediatric patients.
For children diagnostic procedures the amount of activity administered used to be calculated by the formula: Child Weight (Kg) × Maximum Activity ÷ 70Kg. This equation considers the weight of an adult without taking into account children special features such as the activity normalized by body weight or the proportion of body surface area (1). The Nuclear Medicine diagnosis physician must ensure that exposure of patients is the minimum necessary to achieve a diagnostic study, taking into account norms of acceptable image quality established by ARNR in UY-105 (2).
In addition to the optimization of patients protection, it has been minimized the occupational dose.
In 2017 the pediatric dosage card of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) began to be used to calculate the administered activities (Version 5.7.2016).
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the activities administered to children with EANM dosage card and without them. Two medical specialists in Nuclear Medicine determined whether the images had appropriate diagnostic quality. In addition, the effective dose and absorbed dose of the critical organ were calculated.
