Methods and materials
Assesment time intervals:
- baseline (pre-RT)
- end of RT
- 6 weeks post RT
- 6 months post RT
- 12 months post RT
Participants:
- n=87
- breast cancer patients prescribed radical breast radiotherapy
- exclusion criteria- metastatic disease,
comorbidities prohibiting pt from exercising,
reasonable grasp of English to complete questionnaire
Study Endpoints:
- fatigue (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue)
- Physical Activity Level (Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire
- Quality of Life (Short Form-36 Health Survey)
Exercise Intervention:
- home based exercise programme- aerobic,
resistance & flexibility exercise prescription (individualised)
- 1 hour face-to-face consultation with an accredited exercise physiologist (AEP)- exercise instruction,
individualise the exercise prescription
- 4 X 30 min phone consultations with AEP- to monitor progress,
address any issues,
make modifications
- exercise equipment- gymstick and pedometer
- exercise manual and diary- theoretically based with detailed exercise instructions
