Aims and objectives
Mammography and breast ultrasound are the most commonly used primary imaging methods in breast cancer diagnostic,
used also in male population.
Radiographic characteristics are mostly identical to those found in female breast cancers.
Incidence in male population is much lower than in female population,
accounting for 1% of all breast cancers.
The mean age of diagnosis is 65 years.
Risk factors besides advanced age and genetic links include chest irradiation,
liver disease,
hyperestrogenism and androgen deficiency due to testicular dysfunction.

Methods and materials
We retrospectively reviewed clinical,
radiologic and pathologic records of 193 patients who had a unilateral palpable breast mass and were surgically treated at the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia (IORS),
Belgrade,
RS between January 2000 and December 2011.
Results
122 patients (mean 63.0 ± 11.8 years) had malignant lesions,
71 patients (54.8 ± 16.9 years) had benign (p=0.0004).
The most common malignant lesion was IDC (74%) while medullar,
papillary and tubular carcinomas and malignant Schwanoma were represented by 1.8% each.
The most common benign lesions were gynecomastia and fibrocystic changes (43.5% and 20.3% respectively) and the least frequent were intraductal papilloma and foreign body granuloma (2.9% and 1.4% respectively).
Of 122 patients with malignant lesions,
63 (51.6%) were examined with mammography and/or breast ultrasound....
Conclusion
The radiologic examination is obligatory in all cases of unilateral palpable male breast lesions.
Breast ultrasound is the first diagnostic tool aiming to decrease the number of surgical interventions that would be performed as the result of the physical examination,
as the sole diagnostic tool,
in case of asymmetric bilateral gynecomastia.
Mammography is the second diagnostic step in case of unilateral breast masses confirmed by both,
clinical examination and ultrasound.
