Conclusion
The radiologic examination is obligatory in all cases of unilateral palpable male breast lesions.
Breast ultrasound is the first diagnostic tool aiming to decrease the number of surgical interventions that would be performed as the result of the physical examination,
as the sole diagnostic tool,
in case of asymmetric bilateral gynecomastia.
Mammography is the second diagnostic step in case of unilateral breast masses confirmed by both,
clinical examination and ultrasound.
Considering previous history in diagnosing palpable lesions only by physical examination,
this study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of breast ultrasound and mammography in the evaluation of male breast disease and proved that the radiologic examination is necessary in all cases of unilateral palpable male breast lesions.
Breast ultrasound as a low-cost exam and an accurate diagnostic method should be used as the first-step diagnostic tool to differentiate benign from malignant lesions,
due to its sensitivity,
specificity,
and accuracy.
It can also be used if the lesion detected on mammography remained unequivocal.
Mammography,
as second diagnostic step,
may support the diagnosis and provide additional diagnostic information,
also suitable for image guided biopsy.
