Learning objectives
· To discuss the classical imaging signs in neuroradiology.
· To illustrate the classical imaging appearances of important signs in neuro radiology by different modalities.
· To emphasize the importance of these signs in arriving at diagnosis and differential diagnosis of various abnormalities of central nervous system.
Background
Many disorders of the central nervous system show classical imaging signs which helps us in arriving at a diagnosis or possible differential diagnosis.
Signs adds to our confidence and helps in easy remembrance of complex pathologies of brain.
Herewith we discuss the cause of appearance,
imaging characteristics,
and the possible diagnosis and differential diagnosis of each signs.
Findings and procedure details
Classical Imaging appearances using various modalities such as X-RAY skull,
CT,MRI are discussed.
LEMON SIGN:
The lemon sign,
is the shape of the skull resembling a lemon due to indentation of the frontal bone.
It is classically seen as a sign of Chiari II malformationand also seen in the majority (90-98%) of foetuses with spina bifida.
PUFF OF SMOKE APPEARANCE:
Moyamoya,
the Japanese term for “puff of smoke,” refers to progressive stenosis/occlusion of the distal ICAs and proximal ACAs/MCAs with relative sparing of the posterior...
Conclusion
Classical imaging appearances are important tools in accurate diagnosis of certain conditions.
It also helps in arriving at a possible differential diagnosis.
It helps in easy remembrance of complex central nervous system disorders.
It adds confidence to our diagnosis.
