Aims and objectives
Clinical leadership is a healthcare priority within the UK National Health Service (NHS) following the recent Francis report[1] and Keogh review[2].
Radiology is a cross-cutting diagnostic specialty: strong radiology leadership can result in quality improvement across many clinical pathways.
The RCR radiology leadership maturity model demonstrates the opportunities for leadership across the career of a radiologist.
Aims:
Identify leadership development needs of residents and newly appointed consultant radiologists
Develop a national clinical leadership strategy to help emerging leaders to take leadership roles at the forefront...
Methods and materials
Various methods were employed to ensure a comprehensive understanding of both the current leadership landscape and the leadership needs of emerging radiology leaders.
NHS leadership landscape mapping and policy review
Review of a 2012 national resident survey
Focused needs analysis surveys to 40 residents and 40 new consultants
Qualitative one-to-one interviews with eleven senior policy leaders
Results
Descriptive statistics for the quantitative surveys and thematic analysis of the qualitative analysis of telephone interview transcripts and freetext answers on the surveys:
1)2012 National RCR survey responses of 540 trainees
58% reported they did not have opportunities for leadership and management development during their radiology training.
2)Focused needs analysis of 40 radiology residents and 40 new consultants:
Trainees and new consultants often subjectively lack leadership and quality improvement skills and feel uncomfortable about collaborating with management colleagues.
3)Wider leadership opportunities are present for clinicians...
Conclusion
There is a knowledge and skills gap between where emerging radiology leaders want to be and where they are at present.
There are no specific radiology-specific leadership initiatives in the UK.
The RCR are developing a multifaceted RCR clinical leadership strategy embedding strong clinical leadership at the core of RCR work and values
Next steps for the RCR leadership development team include:
Development of an action learning/mentoring programme for keen emerging leaders with senior radiologist mentors who have significant management experience
Involve trainees and new...
