Learning objectives
To describe various locations of neuroblastoma
To describe the imaging appearances of neuroblastoma
To assess the risk status of disease.
Background
Neuroblastoma tumours of ganglion cell origin that derive from primordial neural crest cells,
which are the precursors of the sympathetic nervous system.
Most common extracranial solid pediatric malignancy.
Peak incidence at age of 2–3 years
- Neuroblastomaarise from the adrenal glands,
the organ of Zuckerkandl or along the distribution of the sympathetic ganglia in paraspinal areas from the neck to the pelvis.
- The most common primary site for NBL development is the retroperitoneum,
the adrenal medulla (35%) and the extra-adrenal paraspinal ganglia (30%– 35%),...
Findings and procedure details
Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis,
staging,
treatment planning,
and response evaluation and in follow-up of a case of Neuroblastoma.
• CT/MRI is the initial mode of investigation in detecting neuroblastoma.
• Most common appearances are large,
lobulated,
heterogeneous mass with stippled calcifications.• PET CT is superior in depicting local staging.
• MIBG is superior in evaluation of metastatic disease.
IMAGING
Mandatory
-CT/MRI (evaluation of loco‑regional disease extent)
123‑I MIBG scan (to look for avidity in the primary and screen for metastatic disease‑...
Conclusion
•This presentation gives knowledge about locations and imaging findings of neuroblastoma and how imaging can help in diagnosis,
detecting distant metastasis,
staging,
treatment planning,
response evaluation and in follow-up case of neuroblastoma.
