Learning objectives
To review normal ultra-sonographic anatomy of the elbow joint,
using didactic schemes to describe scanning technique and specific exam objectives.
We will provide anatomical schemes,
showing correlations with sonographic images illustrating both most common findings on elbow pathology and also usual pitfalls on interpretation of elbow ultrasound images.
Background
Study of elbow throughout ultrasound (US) is challenging,
it is an accessible,
real-time,
low-cost technique and has become a first level examination to investigate multiple painful conditions which may affect the elbow.
Usual approach to study the elbow is done through four compartments (anterior,
lateral,
medial,
and posterior).
A good anatomic comprehension of these spaces will provide an appropriate background for a correct examination.
Findings and procedure details
The technique of a routine US elbow examination must be arranged with patient seated and with the elbow placed over examination table.
US diagnostic equipment should be used with linear-array.
It should be remembered that during ultrasonographic evaluation,
transducer management needs maximum stability over the studied area,
because the curvilinear contours of the elbow joint could result in anisotropy and pathological findings may be subtle.
To avoid anisotropy,
transducer must be placed along the long the axis of tendons or ligaments.

Conclusion
Ultrasound imaging of the elbow provides an important first level diagnostic tool for radiologist.
This image technique can provide valuable and accurate information about elbow joint only if US operator follows an accurate and efficient scanning technique and knows well normal US elbow anatomy and most common image findings on elbow pathologies.
