Aims and objectives
The pretherapeutic evaluation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a crucial time in its management.
The aim of this study is to highlight the place of morphological and functional imaging modalities in the evaluation of NPC extension and to evaluate the correlation between them in the determination of its TNM staging.
Methods and materials
This is a retrospective study including 143 cases collected over a period of 3 years (January 2014 to December 2016) in the Oncology and Radiotherapy Department of Ibn Rochd University Hospital of Casablanca in Morocco,
and analyzed at the Radiology Unit of “20 Août 1953” Hospital.
Results
I. Epidemiology
The patients recruited for the study had a median age of 47,
with extremes ranging from 13 to 74 years old.
The distribution of the population of our study by sex has shown a clear prevalence of NPC in men (n = 94) compared to women (n = 49) with a sex ratio of 1.92.
We noted that the ganglionic syndrome is the most frequently observed at the time of diagnosis,
found in 76.3% followed by rhinologic syndrome in 74.9%,
then otological syndrome...

CT,
MRI and PET/CT imaging are complementary in the assessment of NPC.
MRI is superior in depiction and delineation of local tumor extent.
CT remains helpful in the study of nodal and thoracic areas or when the status of the skull base is uncertain on MRI.
PET/CT demonstrates higher diagnosis accuracy in the detection of nodal and distant metastases.
