The objective is to illustrate the main indications of Ultrasound in emergency conditions of an Intensive Care Unit and explain the basic physics and technology of US machines and probe positioning, in order to achieve...
Background
Ultrasound is a powerful, fast and easily accessible diagnostic modality which due to its comparatively small size, has earned a significant role in bedside examinations of ICU patients.US can supply a broad spectrum of medical information regarding the anatomic and functional condition of the various organs, thus assisting in a quick, effective and advanced diagnosis and in the prompt decision of further therapeutic procedures.A series of US lectures on US in Emergency Medicine and the ICU has been used as the main source of the...
Imaging findings OR Procedure details
Basic technique and US semiology is presented for the main US examinations performed in the ICU: Carotids (B-Mode and Color & Power Doppler) Arteries and Veins of the lower extremitiesTranscranial Doppler for the visualization of the Circle of Willis Heart (with the main indications of Transesophageal probe)Abdominal (Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Spleen, Kidneys, Gastrointestinal Tract) and Pelvic US. Emphasis is given on the US semiology in Traumatology.
Conclusion
US is a crucial imaging technology with many critical indications in the context of an ICU. Basic knowledge of physics technology and ultrsound technique are important factors for the efficient use of this modality in the emergency care conditions.
