Learning objectives
To identify the mammographic features of Gynaecomastia . To identify the sonographic features of gynaecomastia. To identify the difference between gynaecomastia and lipomastia. To correlate the sonographic & mammographic types of gynaecomastia to histopathological types. To differentiate between nodular gynaecomastia and benign breast lumps. To differentiate between denderitic gynaecomastia and breast carcinoma.
Background
Gynaecomastia is defined clinically as abnormal enlargment of the breast in men.It is the most important diseases of male breast ,it is the commonest problem affecting the male breast, accounting for about 85% of breast masses . It has been reported in 36% of normal male adults . Gynecomastia is characterized by hyperplasia of the ductal and stromal elements of male breast tissue . Imaging findings OR Procedure details
Mammographic features of Gynaecomastia : Mammography is recommended for the evaluation of the male breast if the differential diagnosis between gynecomastia and lipomastia (fatty enlargement) is not clinically evident, and in all cases of unilateral breast symptoms. Lipomastia or pseudo-gynecomastia is diagnosed when there is prominent adipose tissue without retroareolar densities on mammography (Figure 3) . Gynecomastia usually appears as a fan shaped density emenating from the nipple gradually blending into the surrounding fat ( Figure 1) . Gynecomastia is classified on mammography into two...
Conclusions
Diagnosis of gynaecomastia is very easy when it is a bilateral disease and if there is history of endogenous or exogenous factor. Mammography is recommended for evaluation of male breast if the differential diagnosis between gynaecomastia and fatty enlargement is not clinically evident and in all cases of unilateral breast enlargement . Utrasound is a complementary method to mammography adding to the diagnostic accuracy and is as well used to provide guidance to FNAB in questionable cases. Sono-mammographic crieteria used for differentiation between malignant &...
