Methods and Materials
Information leaflets were sent to patients with the details of their appointment. These were studied and then a short questionnaire containing 9 questions was devised with the help of a Consultant Nuclear Medicine Physician and a receptionist. This specifically assessed patients’ pre-existing knowledge of nuclear medicine. Further questions were included to determine whether the information leaflets had been received beforehand, whether patients read them and how they could be improved. The questionnaire made reference to potentially anxiety-inducing notions of nuclear warfare and radiation exposure. For this reason, approval by the Ethics Committee was sought before distribution. Reception staff distributed 50 copies in each site (Guys’ Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital) to patients to fill in anonymously in the waiting areas. The completed questionnaires were collected and the data collated.
