Purpose

To evaluate the role of synovial elastography in differentiating between inflammatory and infective synovitis.

Methods and Materials

This is a prospective study. Informed consent was taken from all the patients. There were a total of 30 patients in the age group 28 to 76 years. Amongst the 30 patients, there were 19 males and 11 females. There were 20 patients with inflammatory arthritis and 10 patients of tuberulous synovitis. In the 20 patients of inflammatory synovitis, 12 involved the wrist, 2 involved the ankle, 5 involved the small joints and 1 involved the knee. In the 10 patients of infective synovitis, 3...

Results

CASES Case 1- Inflammatory Arthritis- Middle aged lady who is a known case of Rheumatoid arthritis since 5 years. Case 2- Tuberculosis of elbow- 31 year old farmer with chronic pain and restricted movements of elbow with swelling. Case 3- Tuberculosis of knee- 45 yr old construction worker with chronic pain and swelling in knee. Case 4- Tuberculosis of shoulder- 22 yr old farmer with pain and swelling of shoulder with restricted movements. Case 5- Rheumatoid arthritis- Middle aged lady who is a known case...

Conclusion

Our preliminary results reveal that real time sono-elastography may help to differentiate between inflammatory and infective synovitis in the relatively early stages. However other multicenter studies need to be performed to give further credibility to sono-elastography in synovial disorders.
