Our database includes an interactive web-based resource of differential-diagnosis listings ("gamuts") in the domain of neuroradiology. This neuroradiology gamut database comprises differential-diagnosis listings for 177 imaging observations.
In our knowledge model (ontology),
we specified all of the concepts as subclasses of a single class,
"Entity",
and defined relationships between terms. The database incorporates 3,642 terms for disorders and imaging findings,
which are linked by 8,377 relationships. Our Radiology Gamut Ontology's concepts were annotated with RadLex® concepts and SNOMED Clinical Terms® to allow interoperability with other ontologies.
The gamuts can be searched and viewed via the Web (gamuts.net/s/NR) (Fig.
1); disorders and imaging findings are cross-referenced so that one can navigate among them easily. Example images are provided automatically through a link to the ARRS GoldMiner® image search engine (Fig.
2). The interactive Web site features a “Gamut of the Day” and offers a facility to automatically generate multiple-choice quiz questions from the database (Fig.
